You do NOT need to be a KCBS member to participate in the cook off.

**The cook off is operated and conducted on church property, no alcohol will be allowed with exception for cooking purposes only.

Kid’s Fishing Derby – Cancelled

**After watching the weather closely for several days and not seeing any improvement, we have decided to cancel the festival this weekend.**

**09/26/17 Update – We will be stocking the pond with over 200 fish before the derby!

The fishing derby will take place at the pond in front of First Baptist Church of Willis and is open everyone 15 years old or younger. Fishing from the banks will start at 7 am and will go all the way to 10 am. Registration will be down at the pond and will open at 6:30 am. Equipment and bait will NOT be available so please bring your own lucky fishing rod and top secret bait!

All participant 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent.

Two divisions, Minnows (5-11) and Perch (12-15)

Trophies for largest fish (weight), smallest fish (length), and most fish caught in each division!

Awards will be announced at 1 pm.

Ask yourself these questions, do you have what it takes to brave the treacherous voyage on our pond? Are you brave enough for the challenge? Are they crazy? Am I crazy? If you answered yes to any of those questions or you just want to come out and have a good time, come be a part of the Cardboard Regatta!

This event is open to the public to compete and spectate. Your not going to want to miss it!

Open to all ages!

Registration will be open on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.

Cardboard Regatta Rules

Build Rules

  • Boat design is the builder’s choice. Let your imagination run wild! Costumes and team attire are encouraged.
  • The entire boat hull and structural components must be constructed using any thickness of corrugated cardboard. Solid type cardboard such as tubes are not allowed.
  • The boat can be constructed in any fashion, but must remain open for quick evacuation.
  • The boat set up and display must be completed and on church grounds by Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10:00 AM to be eligible for the race. Anything other than minor fixes of the boats on the property will not be allowed.
  • Duct tape, masking tape, single-part adhesives, and single-part paints are the ONLY other materials allowed in the boat construction. If you have to mix it, it isn’t allowed. Adhesives like Liquid Nails and all caulks are encouraged and work great.
  • Any structural material except corrugated cardboard, tapes, glues, and paints are illegal! Some examples are, but not limited to: waxed cardboard, fiberglass, plastic, wood, rubber, shrink-wrap, Styrofoam, and two-part glues/epoxies/paints. NO nails, staples, or metal allowed.
  • Anyone found guilty of illegal boat materials will be DISQUALIFIED.
  • Participants must use oars, paddles, or other similar items to manually propel the boat constructed under the same guidelines as the boats.

Race Rules

  • Boats will need to be designed to carry at least two individuals and allow for easy crew transition.
  • Every crew member must wear an approved Personal Flotation Device (lifejacket).
  • Teams consist of at least 4 individuals.
  • Teams will navigate the course to the swapping location, at which point they will change out crew members (at least 2 new crew members) who will then navigate the course back to the starting position. The boat must have a least 2 crew members in it at all times. If a crew member made the voyage one way, they cannot make the voyage back.
  • Teammates who are not in the boat may not help with the movement of the boat in any way.
  • The race must begin and end with at least a two – person crew intact.
  • Swimming and/or pulling the boat, or the use of the bottom or sides of the pond, or other boats will result in disqualification.
  • Splashing, pushing, ramming, or any other activity that would affect another team will be grounds for disqualification.
  • Each boat will travel roughly 80 yards.
  • Time from heats will determine placement for finals.
  • All race participants MUST sign a waiver and release agreement.
  • Crew members MUST be able to swim to participate. We ask that racers be prepared to possibly go down with the ship.
  • Categories for judging are:
    • Fastest time
    • The most spectacular sinking

Boat Judging

  • Boats will be judged on their creativity as part of the pre-race activities.
  • Teams should be prepared to “show – off” their work upon the start of the judging @ 10:00 AM
  • Category for judging are:
    • Best Looking (judged using three criteria construction, theme, and boat name)

King Of The Mountain Challenge

  • Challenge will take place directly after the boat races have been completed.
  • Boat must have completed the Boat Race.
  • The challenge is simple, the boat that can hold the most crew members in it before it begins to take on water is the winner!

Pie Eatin’ Contest – Cancelled

Adult Division (19 and up), Fruit pie

Youth Division (12-18), Fruit pie

Children’s Division (5-11), Chocolate pie

  • 5-minute time limit.
  • Pies will be placed on table and hands will be kept behind backs at all times during the competition.
  • No forks or hands may be used. Use of forks will cause disqualification. Mouths and faces only!
  • The first person to finish his/her pie and stand upright, or when the time limit is reached, will be declared the winner. The head judge will decide if the pie is actually finished or who has consumed the most pie at the end of 5 minutes.
  • In the event of a tie, whichever one of the tied contestants who, in the opinion of the head judge, ends up wearing the most pie and the biggest smile will be announced as the overall winner.
  • Any visible signs of sickness will cause disqualification.
  • Waiver MUST be signed by contestants prior to contest.
  • All children contestants must have a parent’s signature on the waiver.
  • The number of contestants will be limited to the first 10 to register in each division.
Kid’s Q Cook Off – Cancelled

Limited to 30 kids

**Registration opens on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 4:30 pm.

Cook off begins on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 5:30 pm.

Turn-in will be from 7:25 pm to 7:35 pm, not a second earlier and not a second later.

This year’s meat will be 2lbs of hamburger for both divisions. BE CREATIVE!

We provide the meat, the charcoal, a set of tongs, an apron, and an individual grill for each contestant. You bring any additional utensils needed, your secret seasonings, and your master cooking skills. Garnish is optional and anything goes for garnish. You may bring anything you wish to use in or with your meat. Parental attendance is required at all times during the competition. Parents are allowed to ONLY flip and cut in the Junior Division and ONLY allowed to cut in the Senior Division. Any and all other parental involvement in the kid’s cook-off is not allowed and will be grounds for disqualification. All entries will be judged according to KCBS rules and regulations judging on taste, texture, and appearance.

The items provided for each contestant will be theirs to take home to continue mastering their grillin’ skills!
